Welcome to indianimmigrants.org, your online folk museum portal. The MGI folk museum is located at Mahatma Gandhi Avenue, Mahatma Gandhi Institute, Moka, Mauritius. In the 19th Century, Mauritius was the largest recipient of indentured labour of the British Empire. The Mahatma Gandhi Institute Folk Museum of Indian Immigration and Archives is undisputably the one and only place where the indenture experience is highlighted. Manuscripts of more than 160 years old unravel the indentured immigrant mobility from the port of embarkation to the place of their binding contract. To-day any Mauritian of Indian Origin can obtain his ancestral individual migrant data which empowers him for a (PIO) people of Indian origin card.
